Right Now God

The book of Ezra records the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem. It is a wonderful picture of God’s faithfulness in the midst of opposition. As I was reading this account God shared an important truth which can be found in chapter 4, verses 11 & 12. “… And all the people shouted with a great shout when they praised the Lord because the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid. Yet many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers’ households, the old men who had seen the first temple, wept with a loud voice when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes, while many shouted aloud for joy,” ~ Ezra‬ ‭3:11-12‬ ‭NASB‬‬

Why did the older men weep while the younger men rejoiced? It was because the older men remembered the first temple in all its glory and were disappointed because the new temple was not as grand. The younger men had not seen the first temple and so they rejoiced at the new thing God was doing.

It is often the same today. Many of us older believers have traditions and beliefs that are grounded in our Christian heritage that sometimes don’t quite fit into the church as it is today. As a result many weep, as it were, for the days past rather than rejoicing over what God is doing today.

So here is the lesson from Ezra 4:11-12. Don’t hold onto what God did and miss what God is doing. Don’t dwell in the past when God is moving in the here and now. Don’t miss what God wants to do in your life today because it may look different than it did yesterday.

If this rings true then consider sharing this with your Christian brothers and sisters. God is always moving forward and his desire is that we boldly follow along.
