Dealing With Anxiety

Most of us have experienced anxiety at some point in our life. We may get anxious over  an upcoming test or job interview or maybe it’s a doctor’s report or a layoff notice. Then there is that deep, debilitating anxiety that arises when your spouse calls it quits or the phone rings and you learn your son or daughter has been in a severe accident. No matter what level of anxiety you are facing God has an answer.

Philippians 4:6-9 (NIV) says. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

Notice that prayer and petition with thanksgiving is just the first step. After we have prayed and given it to God we need to change our thinking. Instead of going back and refocusing on our anxiety or those things which make us anxious God wants us to leave it with him and then begin thinking about what is true, noble, right, pure, etc. And what is the outcome? And the God of peace will be with you.
