What is a Christian?

Posted: October 10, 2015 in Uncategorized

“Most people in most churches think they are following Jesus, but I’m not so sure. They may think they are following Jesus, but the reality is this: they have invited Jesus to follow them…..They have bought in, but they haven’t sold out.” ~ Mark Batterson, “All In”

Does that describe you? Are you like the ones Jesus spoke of in Luke 6:46 when he said, “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?”

Do you do what he says only when it’s convenient or when it’s something you want to do? Or do you obey him even when it makes you feel uncomfortable or costs you something?  If your answer is the former then you have to admit Jesus is not your Lord. He may be your Savior, but then again…

The Apostle Paul said you are to, “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?” (2 Corinthians 13:5 NIV)

So what is the test? How do you know you belong to Christ?

1 John 5:11-12 tells us, “God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.”

The problem according to Isaiah 59:2 is, “…your iniquities have built barriers between you and your God, and your sins have made Him hide His face from you so that He does not listen.”

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

So now, “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9)

What do you believe? Do you believe that Jesus died to pay for your sin, that he rose from the dead, and lives today drawing others like you to himself so that they can know this salvation? If the answer is yes, then the next question is, have you surrendered your will to his and given up your life so that he can live his life through you in order to reach others?  This is what it means for Jesus to be Lord of your life.

If you have truly experienced His salvation there should be evidence of that experience. Do people know you as a follower of Christ? Are you actively sharing your faith with the people in your life?

I would encourage you to sit down and take a hard look at your relationship with God and make sure that you truly do belong to him. It has been my conviction for a long time that many who consider themselves to be a Christian may not be simply because they have never taken the time to count the cost. (Luke 14:27-32)

As someone once said, Jesus is either Lord of all or he is not Lord at all. Which is he to you?
